I am known as “Q” and was honored to serve our country in the U.S. Army. While serving, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease but the Army trained me to be a soldier and how to deal with life’s challenges. After my time ended in the Army, I furthered my education focusing on nursing. Nursing has always been my passion and joy since I was seven years old. During school I faced some untimely deaths in my family, one being my mother from breast cancer. She was strong as a rock. Though it was tough, I learned to emulate a lot of my mother’s qualities in my life.
In 2009 while living in Florida, I was in a major car accident leaving me paralyzed from T3 and below. I traveled to Pennsylvania to recover. I vowed to be back in Florida within one year. With expert training and new ways to relearn my body, I met my goal with the help of a dear cousin. I met many other goals I never would have dreamed possible. I participated in a Para-Olympic summer program, winter sports clinic and various other sports programs. I traveled abroad to London and Paris and also assisted a SCI physical therapist in teaching ballroom dancing.
Over the last couple years, I had to deal with several other medical incidents. These tried to knock me down and almost made me want to tap out. But being the warrior and fighter I am internally and externally, I have persevered and continued to grow.
I was thrilled to be selected as a model for Bold Beauty. I want to share my story and let others know that beauty is from the inside. It’s not defined by a wheelchair, pain or the scars on my body. I described my beauty as a positive, uplifting Pandora’s Box, spewing joy and happiness.
