Spinal Muscular Atrophy
As Ms. Wheelchair Southeastern USA 2016, Maylan resides in Hialeah, Florida and attends Florida International University majoring in psychology. Maylan enjoys the art of cosplay, costumes inspired by anime characters, writing poetry, attending concerts, and painting watercolors. She is also in the processes of spearheading a documentary on her life to demonstrate that when you set your mind on something it can be achieved.
Maylan was diagnosed with Type II Spinal Muscular Atrophy at the age of 1½ shortly after arriving in the USA from Cuba. For the last 17 years, Maylan has been affiliated with the Ventilated Assisted Children Center Camp in Miami, Florida, a week-long camp open to children from all over the world with respiratory issues.
Maylan’s platform, “Ending the Inclusion Rhetoric,” focuses on inclusion without having to think about it. She is proud to be part of the Bold Beauty Project.
