Juliet Romeo: Bbp/ucla Model
I’m Juliet Romeo—an award-winning filmmaker, disability advocate, and The Queen of Purple Hair. I create authentic stories that celebrate my identity as a disabled Caribbean woman. When I’m not working on projects that dive into themes of resilience, womanhood, and social justice, I’m advocating at the Capitol for sickle cell disease healthcare and disability rights. I’m also the founder of the Unstoppable program at the Oscar-qualifying Slamdance Film Festival in Los Angeles, where we uplift and support filmmakers with disabilities. For the past five years, this initiative has inspired filmmakers worldwide, and I’ve been honored with the title “The Fairy Filmmaker Godmother,” which means the world to me. My work has been featured on PBS and Delta Airlines’ in-flight entertainment, shining a light on the realities of living with sickle cell disease. Being part of the Bold Beauty Project has been another incredible opportunity to celebrate confidence, strength, and representation. This is my second exhibit with Eva Ritvo and Bold Beauty, and it was absolutely iconic. Working with the super talented photographer Lisa Nalven was a blast—she captured my fun personality and the Hollywood vibe I was going for. Every moment was filled with joy, and she made me feel beautiful…flaws and all. It reminded me to see the beauty in every part of me. Living with the chronic pain and health challenges of sickle cell disease makes moments like these even more meaningful. They encourage me to keep pushing for a fulfilled life, and my hope is that someone else sees my photo and my story and believes they can do it, too.
