Reshma Iqbal: Bbp/ucla Model
Reshma is on a mission to save the environment by transforming old objects into new treasures, whether it is turning a torn pair of pants into a sturdy drawstring bag, making greeting cards from wedding invitations, or making her own junk journals. She lives vicariously through her collection of postcards from all over the world while savoring fresh, whole, and homemade food. When not studying for her Master’s program in Global Inclusion and Social Development at the University of Massachusetts Boston, Reshma loves embarking on an endorphin rush, losing herself in jigsaw puzzles and word games, embracing public transport, and thinking of more ways to reduce her carbon footprint.
As a self-advocate with lifelong profound deafness, Reshma passionately pushes for universal accommodations for everyone, regardless of their choice to self-disclose. Love watching foreign language movies with captions? Captions – originally designed for individuals with deafness – are a powerful tool that also enhances literacy for hearing populations. Reshma’s love for reading led her to science fiction that has evolved into current, real-world applications. Who knew that we would one day converse with a creative, funny, and empathetic AI entity popularly known as ChatGPT? Reshma is currently on a mission to introduce inclusive AI (artificial intelligence) literacy education in early intervention centers for preschoolers with oral deafness, by equipping them with the fundamental knowledge to play a leading role in designing an AI-driven future that reflects their diverse needs and voices.
